Causes of tooth discoloration

1. Color change due to external elements
The color of food such as coffee, tea, wine, soy sauce, soybean paste, red pepper paste, kimchi, curry, black bean noodles and red pepper noodle soup can discolor teeth as the color penetrates into and accumulates in small holes of tooth enamel.
Cigarette nicotine is also one of causes of tooth discoloration and if dental hygiene is poor, plaque can accumulate on the surface of teeth or if using oral cleanser for a long period, it can also discolor teeth.

2. Color change due to internal elements
Some permanent teeth are yellowish congenitally. If the growth of baby teeth is poor or due to infection, the formation of permanent teeth can be influenced and yellowish teeth can be produced. In addition, due to medicine used, metabolic diseases, or dental aging, the color of teeth can turn blackish or yellowish.

Types of teeth whitening

There are three types of teeth whitening: professional whitening which is done at a dental clinic; general teeth whitening which is done at home with a dental prescription; and home-made teeth whitening which is done at home by using a whitening product sold on the market.

Professional teeth whitening
Refers to teeth whitening done by dentists. Uses whitening medicine containing 15% highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide and a blue light device for whitening teeth. Produces good effects within shortest time but it can make teeth feel sensitive.

General teeth whitening
Refers to teeth whitening done at home by using a dental prescription and a mouth guard. Takes several days or weeks in general to see noticeable whitening effects, and uses a whitening agent containing 6% or lower hydrogen peroxide, so the teeth may get sensitive.

Home-made teeth whitening
Refers to teeth whitening by using a teeth whitening product sold on the market. It is safe to use, but it takes long time to see noticeable results

Maintenance of teeth whitening effect

Immediately after a tooth whitening treatment, teeth look the whitest. After 1-2 weeks, the color starts to stabilize and returns to the original color of the teeth gradually over time.
Due to cigarette smoking or frequent consumption of food (coffee, green tea, wine, cola), the discoloration of teeth can occur easily.
To prevent discoloration after tooth whitening, use teeth whitening once a year to maintain a whitening effect.

After teeth whitening

If a lot of plaque exists on the surface of teeth, scale teeth before a whitening treatment to get better results. Plaque is a foreign matter covering the surface of teeth, so it can hamper a whitening treatment. Remove plaque before a whitening treatment to have an even whitening effect. If you enjoy drinking coffee, cola or tea, rinse your mouth after consuming drink to maintain white teeth.
As you cannot brush your teeth every time you consume beverage, have a habit of removing colorant which may be remaining in your mouth by using water to prevent discoloration of teeth.
